One thing in that puzzle's defense though - as you mentioned, you can prove that it's mathematically impossible to get the desired combination from the starting position with the two functions you initially have, so you can infer there's a third mechanic at work somewhere. I actually did it when I was 10 because I was randomly pulling on everything and holding it down was one of the first things I did, so never thought much of it. I've definitely watched LPers struggle with that puzzle and then immediately facepalm groan when they figure it out, sometimes by accident. Unfortunately it's not as good as The Witness at teaching you the rules and the puzzles aren't really suited for pen and paper. The game is really good at teaching the rules and mechanics of the game, avoid ambiguity and help you develop an intuitive sense for how to solve the puzzles.Īnd if you enjoy the abstract puzzles in The Witness and don't mind playing an even harder game, then have a look at Filament. If you like the logic-style puzzles in Quern, then I'd say you'll most likely enjoy The Witness. I took about three times as many notes playing Quern as I did Obduction. If you enjoyed figuring out the Villein number system and the Maray maze in Obduction then you'll enjoy Quern. It leans heavier towards logic-style puzzles than the Myst games and Obduction. I'll echo what others have said and recommend that you start out with Quern. The fact that most of the puzzles are easy to draw on squared paper is one thing I really appreciated about The Witness.
I expect you'll be putting the controller down frequently and both grabbing a notepad to work out the puzzles. The Witness is clearly inspired by Myst, but it's more of a pure puzzle game with less story and more abstract puzzles.
